About The Position

The Engineering Assistant/Inspector II is a full-time, classified, hourly position that performs work for the Shelby County Highway Department. This role involves providing technical assistance on engineering and construction projects, including inspection, testing, documentation, drafting, and surveying. The position requires interaction with developers, utility operators, consultant engineers, contractors, representatives from The Alabama Department of Transportation, and citizens of Shelby County. The role also includes other duties as assigned by superiors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Eight or more years' experience in progressively complex inspection and management activities in highway construction, surveying, material testing, or computer aided drafting OR up to four years of college coursework in engineering or technical training in computer aided drafting and design and surveying in addition to four or more years of experience in progressively complex inspection and management activities in highway construction, surveying, material testing, or computer aided drafting (8 years or more combined of education and experience.)
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willing to work outdoors and in extreme weather conditions.
  • Willing to work nonstandard hours and more than 40 hours per week if necessary.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Traffic Control Inspector, Nuclear Safety, Roadway Technician and Certified Concrete Technician from the Alabama Department of Transportation.
  • Certification as an Asphalt Level I and Level II Technician OR as an NBI Bridge Inspector OR demonstrated proficiency in Microstation including the ability to produce complex plans and design drawings from engineering sketches and notes.
  • Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience and proficiency using ALDOT's Construction and Materials Management System (CAMMS)

Responsibilities

  • Provides inspection services, testing, and documentation for road and bridge construction projects.
  • Investigates and documents citizen's concerns regarding roadway and drainage issues.
  • Inspects County roadways and associated infrastructure, produces reports, and determines the need for repairs or maintenance.
  • Provides inspection and documentation for maintenance activities performed by County and contracted forces.
  • Maintains or assists in maintaining files and drawings.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.
