About The Position

Under immediate supervision, this role involves drafting basic drawings, maps, and profiles, assisting in field surveys and inspections, helping customers, and processing applications for permits and services. The position utilizes Computer Aided Design Drafting (CADD) methods to prepare designs and performs related mathematical calculations. It also involves customer service, administrative assistance, processing work orders, calculating charges, responding to inquiries, making copies of documents, maintaining files and databases, and reviewing contracts and applications for completeness. Additionally, the role includes performing manual labor for surveys, operating survey and electronic equipment, assisting in the review of construction project plans, and inspecting standard construction site projects as an entry-level crew member.

  • High School diploma or GED, or higher.
  • Some positions may require a Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.

Responsibilities

  • Draft basic drawings, maps, and profiles in accordance with clearly defined guidelines.
  • Utilize Computer Aided Design Drafting (CADD) methods.
  • Prepare draft design basic drawings, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Perform related mathematical calculations.
  • Draw drainage, water and sewer lines, street layout, control points, and elevations.
  • Identify required materials and draft specifications.
  • Process work orders, applications for services or permits.
  • Calculate charges for services to be performed.
  • Respond to radio, telephone, and walk-in customer or field crew inquiries and requests for copies of maps, specifications, layouts, etc.
  • Make copies of maps, specifications, as-builts, and construction plans and documents for permanent files.
  • Fax copies upon request to field staff, contractors, architects, consultants, and the public.
  • Maintain files and records for staff and department.
  • Maintain and update databases.
  • Retrieve records and provide customers with accurate record of information.
  • Review contracts, applications, and work orders for completeness.
  • Organize and stock equipment and supplies as assigned.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and para-professional tasks to assist staff, as assigned.
  • Refer complex queries to more knowledgeable staff.
  • Compile information and prepare inspection and other reports.
  • Assist in field surveys, collect data, and operate survey and electronic equipment.
  • Assist in surveys and data collection and place information in permanent manual or electronic files.
  • Act as rod and chain handler in survey crew.
  • Collect traffic, vehicular, and pedestrian count data and ensure proper placement of traffic counter equipment and safety in the field.
  • Field check plans against utility, water and sewer, and drainage lines, water flow, and street construction and identify disparities for review by senior staff.
  • Gather field data and translate into maps, plans, profiles, and graphs to assist in plan development, traffic control, signage installation, and modification.
  • Learn appropriate operation and care of surveying and computerized equipment.
  • Perform manual labor to dig for monuments and other control points, clear brush and vegetation to clear line of sight for instruments.
  • Drive stakes to mark points, place safety cones around instrument locations for protection from traffic, perform duties of flag handler to direct traffic.
  • Assist with proper programming and field use of computerized electronic boards and related equipment.
  • Test, charge, and replace batteries and pneumatic hoses, as assigned.
  • Assist in review of construction project plans, design, and calculations.
  • Review plans, drawings, and calculations for construction, site development, streets, drainage, water or sewer lines, or storm water management or residential subdivision improvement plans prepared by consultants, contractors, engineers, and architects for readily apparent deviations from standardized, designated limits of possible errors in calculation, design or noncompliance on plans and corrections sheets.
  • Suggest modifications to supervisor regarding plans to bring them into compliance and coordinate with parties.
  • Inspect standard construction site projects (streets, paving, base course, sub grade and utility work, sidewalks and drainage) during all phases to verify conformance to technical code and ordinances, Federal and City regulations as an entry-level crew member.
  • Verify parking layouts and traffic plans.
  • Identify readily apparent variances from plan specifications, investigate problems, and communicate to supervisor differences between designs and construction.
