About The Position

Under the general direction of the Town Engineer or their designee, this role performs a variety of tasks in support of the Engineering Department. The position involves assisting with survey field work, clearing survey lines, measuring distances, setting stakes, and maintaining equipment. Responsibilities also include plotting field data, performing basic drafting and title search work, and providing assistance and information to the public. The role coordinates 'call before you dig' requests, performs field mark-outs, assists with map checks, updates various maps (assessors, topographic, as-built), and updates GIS layers with street opening data. The position requires cross-training as determined by departmental needs.

Requirements

  • Ability to make arithmetic computations and maintain basic records.
  • Knowledge of drafting and mathematics.
  • Ability to use hand tools and surveying equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work outdoors and lift/carry survey equipment.
  • Must have computer knowledge and basic skills.
  • Associate’s degree in civil engineering or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • One to two years’ experience in construction or building trades.
  • Must be citizens of the United States or present proper authorization to work in the United States by the closing date.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with survey field work.
  • Clears the survey line of weeds, brush and other obstructions.
  • Works with others to measure distances using a variety of methods.
  • Sets line or grade stakes and other markers.
  • Cleans and maintains various types of equipment.
  • May plot field data and layout.
  • Performs any and all assigned tasks relating to the Engineering Department.
  • May perform basic drafting and basic title search work.
  • Will be cross trained, as determined by departmental needs.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public visiting the department.
  • Coordinates call before you dig requests and perform the mark-outs in the field.
  • Assists in performing map checks for filing of record maps.
  • Assists in the updating of assessors, topographic and as-built maps.
  • Updates GIS layer with street opening data.
