About The Position

Breaking Ground is an organization dedicated to providing housing and services to people experiencing homelessness. They operate nearly 4,000 units of housing across New York City, upstate New York, and Connecticut, focusing on supportive housing which combines affordable housing with long-term services. Their Street to Home outreach program and transitional housing resources help individuals move from street homelessness to permanent homes. The Sutphin Residence in Jamaica, Queens, is a 173-unit permanent, affordable, and supportive housing building for low-income and formerly homeless older adults, offering onsite services like case management, recreational activities, self-sufficiency workshops, and health/medical care coordination. The Engineer position is part of the maintenance department, responsible for maintaining common areas and apartments in residential buildings, including offices, multi-purpose rooms, roof deck, garden, trash collection area, lobby, fitness room, and sidewalks. This role involves basic plumbing, woodworking, and electrical work and has a 35-hour work week.

Requirements

Three years of comparable work experience
High School Diploma, GED, Trade School Diploma, or its equivalent required
Skilled at operating power tools
Have basic knowledge of electric and plumbing
Able to lift and move furniture and appliances and stand for many hours at a stretch
Able to climb multiple flights of stairs if elevators fail
