About The Position

Arizona Public Service (APS) is seeking an Engineer I, II, or III to support its Renewable Generation Engineering team. The role supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of utility-scale solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrids, and associated generation systems. The engineer provides technical support throughout the asset lifecycle, including troubleshooting, performance analysis, equipment modifications, projects, testing, commissioning, and reliability improvements. The level of hire may depend on education, experience, technical knowledge, and demonstrated engineering capability. The position prepares engineering plans, designs, analyses, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations, and verifications, ensuring work complies with design, regulatory, operating, and maintenance requirements. It collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to understand project objectives and deliver work within customer requirements, budget, and schedule. The role may include oversight of engineering programs, responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects, and technical guidance for less experienced engineers. This is a hybrid role. Employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in person at an APS or other non-home-office location and to reside in Arizona, or in New Mexico if based at Four Corners. Home-office work requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic setup. Role types may change based on business need. The position requires obtaining and maintaining Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access under NERC standards, including a seven-year criminal history check and recurring background checks every seven years. Some positions may also require applicants to be a U.S. person under applicable U.S. export control laws.

Requirements

  • Engineer I: Four-year bachelor’s degree in an engineering or related applied science discipline from an ABET-accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA)-recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institution.
  • Engineer II: The qualifying four-year bachelor’s degree listed for Engineer I, plus two years of experience in engineering-related positions. A relevant master’s degree in engineering may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Engineer III: Four-year bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, an IEA-recognized institution, or an ABET MRA institution, plus five years of experience in engineering-related positions. The degree must be from an accredited College of Engineering program. A relevant master’s degree in engineering may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Engineering background applicable to generation, renewable energy, energy storage, power systems, controls, or industrial facilities.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment; this involves a seven-year criminal history background check and an additional background check every seven years.
  • Applicants must confirm U.S. person or non-U.S. person status for export-control compliance; some positions may require U.S. person status. All openings at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Stations require applicants to be U.S. persons.
  • Approved degree disciplines include Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, and Structural. A four-year bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology is not automatically considered equivalent to a B.S. in Engineering; curriculum review by Engineering department management is required.
  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona, or in New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees.
