About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking an organized, detailed-oriented team member to join the Pavement Design Section in our Materials and Research Division. The person in this role will support the creation of pavement determinations for the development of Nebraska's state highway system by evaluating current pavement conditions and prescribing rehabilitation strategies for deteriorated pavements. The ideal candidate thrives in a dynamic environment, has exceptional communication and critical thinking skills, and enjoys supporting a collaborative team. Under limited supervision of a higher-level engineer, you will assist the Pavement Design Engineer by providing pavement design data needed to determine pavement type, thickness, condition, and rehabilitation strategy for review by the Pavement Design Engineer. You will play a critical role in maintaining the integrity and safety of Nebraska's highways and have a unique opportunity to apply pavement rehabilitation strategies in real-life applications while contributing to projects that impact communities across the state. Due to the unique duties of this position, training will be provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
  • Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent).
  • Must have valid driver’s license or the ability to provide authorized independent transportation.
  • Ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule including occasional long hours.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
  • Basic knowledge of MicroStation and OnBase.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe products.
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and electronic file management skills.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to communicate effectively with people of different disciplines and backgrounds.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pavement design, construction and/or roadway design experience.
  • Experience in interpreting highway construction plans.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Clarity, and OnBase.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Pavement Design Engineer by providing pavement design data needed to determine pavement type, thickness, condition, and rehabilitation strategy.
  • Review historical pavement data and As-Built plans to evaluate current pavement conditions and identify distresses.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to collect data needed for pavement condition evaluations.
  • Evaluate existing pavement designs and techniques to find ideas for improved performance.
  • Perform design analysis using Pavement ME Design.
  • Coordinate requests for pavement cores and non-destructive testing on highway segments for further analysis.
  • Prepare pavement strategies for review by the Pavement Design Engineer.
  • Attend project coordination meetings as needed.
  • Write correspondence to District Engineers, Roadway Design personnel, and Project Development personnel.
  • Prepare estimates of project quantities and costs.
  • Review Roadway Design plans and update the pavement determination as needed as project development progresses.
  • Keep project records current and organized by filing decision documentation and correspondence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
