About The Position

An Engineering Inspector in West Valley City is responsible for ensuring that construction projects within the city's public right-of-way comply with established engineering standards and regulations. This role involves inspecting and monitoring various infrastructure projects, including private developments and city capital improvement projects. Candidates will be considered for the highest level they qualify for.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • Current Utah Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to being hired.
  • Five years of experience in construction or engineering activities.
  • Possession of an accredited GIS Professional Certificate may be substituted for one year of required experience.
  • An associate degree in civil engineering, surveying, construction management, GIS or department approved equivalent may be substituted for two years of experience.
  • Possession of a Professional Land Surveyor license may be substituted for four years of required experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and manage other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to receive feedback on performance with a positive attitude, and willingness to suggest ideas to supervisor to improve procedures.
  • Willingness to discern/resolve problems with residents and others on construction projects.
  • Must be able to manage stressful situations and maintain a calm demeanor.
  • APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII) (will have or obtain within 12 months of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Works under the general direction of the Assistant City Engineer/Construction Manager.
  • Understand basic principles, theories and practices of engineering and construction.
  • Gather and compile information and write concise reports.
  • Understand and apply principles and methods of conflict resolution.
  • Understand the purpose and use of policies and procedures.
  • Speak clearly, concisely, and effectively, and to listen to and understand the ideas of others.
  • Use various software programs related to job duties.
  • Use construction management software for daily diary comments, item quantities, submittal review, and item payments.
  • Understand construction material properties and principles for proper placement.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Measure and track accurate material placement quantities on a construction project.
  • Enforce specifications on a construction project.
  • Interpret and enforce minimum sampling and testing requirements.
  • Operate spreadsheet and word processing software in the workflow of the division.
  • Execute assigned tasks in a safe manner, able to identify and report potential safety hazards.
  • Make accurate records of activities in the Engineering Division, including daily diary reports.
  • Operate city equipment and vehicles in a safe and professional manner.
  • Discern/resolve problems with residents and others on construction projects in a timely manner.
  • Inventory and survey public works projects and infrastructure.
  • May be responsible for the occasional issuance of an excavation permit.
  • Assumes primary management role on city construction projects.
  • Assists in the construction design review process.
