About The Position

The Engineer in System Planning provides transmission-focused subject matter expertise in power system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of the transmission system. The role requires experience associated with the modeling, analyses, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. This position also represents the company on regional and national transmission committees regarding transmission planning matters for NEPOOL, NERC, NPCC, and ISO‑NE. The role is based in Hartford CT or Berlin, CT.

Requirements

  • Experience with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, PSCAD, or other similar analysis software.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python.
  • Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards and reliability criteria.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.
  • Excellent team skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others, and accepts responsibility for outcomes.
  • Skill in working cross functionally.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical preferred.
  • 3 - 5 years of directly related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the system models for transmission studies including collection, review and/or modification of a variety of electric system parameters: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology.
  • Conduct adequacy assessments and develop options to meet delivery objectives with latitude for independent action and decision making.
  • Conduct reliability studies including analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients.
  • Identify key technical issues and develop solutions.
  • Understand, interpret and apply industry and corporate transmission planning standards and the regulations of Federal, State and Local authorities.
  • Represent the department and the company on various industry related committees.
  • Participate with other utilities and the planning staff of ISO‑NE in the preparation of regional transmission expansion studies.
  • Employ teamwork with engineers in System Planning, Transmission Asset Strategy, and engineers and operating personnel elsewhere in Electric Operations in performing analyses and providing technical support in planning and operational environments.
  • Plan, develop and collaborate in the implementation and management of the life cycle plan for transmission assets.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing the results of analyses and action plans.
