BorgWarner•Bellwood, IL
•$115,200 - $162,000

About The Position

Provides technical leadership for groups of complex projects involving concept creation and selection, product design, testing, development, and the modification and improvement of existing products, with a focus on core friction paper technology. The role develops and implements innovative processes and technologies to support growth of the friction product portfolio and drives development of the production-line supplier roadmap. The Engineer Staff plans, schedules, executes, and coordinates work from project initiation through production. Within a cross-functional team, the role helps define products and their designs, supports process selection, and leads product-related technical work for new and existing products. It supports concurrent engineering activities at the Bellwood Plant and with vendors and customers, and adjusts priorities to meet changing team needs. The position involves extensive collaboration with production, prototype build, design/CAD, quality assurance, purchasing, finance, engineering test, management, component vendors, consultants, and customers. The role advances product and process innovation, including chemical-process manufacturing methods such as saturation, metal surface preparation, adhesive coating, and bonding. It collaborates with global engineering teams at plants and technical centers and owns manufacturability of new friction materials in partnership with Onyx, the strategic friction-material supplier. The position also leads product management, project execution, problem prevention, and customer relations activities. Maintaining awareness of relevant technology through professional journals, trade shows, and coursework is expected. The incumbent must communicate effectively, demonstrate integrity when handling sensitive technical information, and work collaboratively to resolve problems.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and obtain cross-functional support to solve problems.
  • Ability to adjust priorities as team needs change.
  • Creative problem-solving, ability to effectively present solutions, engineering technology, ability to measure solution performance, and relationship maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Generate competitive design concepts for new products and concepts for cost reductions supporting BBOS goals.
  • Define product performance requirements and specifications.
  • Ensure product drawings and layouts follow model drawing formats and are released in a timely manner; apply Design Standards and, where needed, the Design Manual.
  • Develop SFMEAs and DFMEAs for products and assist the team with concept selection.
  • Direct benchmarking of competitive products and DOE robustness studies.
  • Drive innovation and process improvement in chemical-process manufacturing methods, including saturation, metal surface preparation, adhesive coating, and bonding.
  • Collaborate closely with global engineering teams at plants and technical centers.
  • Take ownership of manufacturability for new friction materials and work with Onyx as the strategic friction-material supply partner.
  • Coordinate layouts of Extended Evidence Manuals.
  • Create and maintain program plans using Microsoft Project and complete work on time.
  • Prepare and present technical reports with conclusions and recommendations; prepare PPAP reports and support the APQP process.
  • Direct product testing by preparing prototype and test requests, analyzing results, drawing conclusions, and writing test reports.
  • Evaluate and analyze design and performance issues, initiate corrective action, and perform failure analysis.
  • Continually improve problem-solving capabilities and understanding of customers’ products.
  • Direct 8D or 5P teams and make permanent system changes to prevent recurrence of problems.
  • Assist with completing RFQs within BBOS time goals and with on-time delivery of prototype parts.
  • Conduct customer reviews on product and project status; schedule and direct customer validation.
  • Promote and present proposals for complete component systems to customers.
  • Plan, schedule, execute, and coordinate project work from initiation through production, including product definition, design, and process-selection support.
