Engineer, Sr, Power Electronics

Eos Energy Storage•Edison, NJ

About The Position

This position is accountable for independently designing and implementing cost-effective electronic battery management system (BMS) solutions for battery storage. The Senior Power Electronics Engineer designs and troubleshoots circuits, conducts modeling and analysis, produces schematics and layouts, and performs other work related to electronic BMS design. The role designs and develops power electronic devices, including DC-to-DC converters, DC-to-AC inverters, AC-to-DC rectifiers, and power supplies. It also involves modeling battery-string control configurations, analyzing power systems, verifying electronic components and product designs, maintaining power-systems application functionality, and designing to applicable safety certification standards. The engineer coordinates prototype-related vendors, suppliers, and contractors and provides technical guidance to engineering, manufacturing, and field operations. Duties may change or be assigned as needed within the company's agile design group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting, analyzing, and resolving complex electrical problems.
  • Expertise designing DC/DC converters and DC/AC inverters, with an emphasis on low-cost, high-performance designs for battery systems.
  • Experience with the design, specification, and procurement of electrical equipment and systems, such as switchgear, motors, heat tracing, UPS, batteries, cathodic protection, motor-operated valves, transformers, breakers, relays, and temporary generators.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical theory and electronics design in digital and analog domains.
  • Ability to design and lay out electrical circuit boards and follow IPC and other safety design standards using Altium or KiCad.
  • Working knowledge of embedded control systems and their applications.
  • Familiarity with EMC design and the ability to trace EMI issues.
  • Awareness of safety certification processes, including standards such as UL.
  • Knowledge of communications protocols such as TCP/IP, CAN, I²C, and SPI, specifically Modbus.
  • Strong cross-disciplinary system-design skills.
  • Ability to select and integrate off-the-shelf components and equipment.
  • Ability to work with a broader team and understand how components fit into larger systems.
  • Understanding of hardware and design requirements for components and the product as a whole.
  • Strong sense of ownership and initiative, with the ability to follow through on objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Design circuit-board layouts for high-impedance analog signals, including high-voltage creepage and clearance requirements.
  • Design and simulate discrete analog and digital circuits.
  • Develop first-principles techno-economic models to help define battery-string control dimensions and electrical configurations.
  • Account for shunt currents, current-collector losses, bussing and switching efficiency, and BMS costs in modeling.
  • Design and develop power electronic devices, including DC-to-DC converters, DC-to-AC inverters, AC-to-DC rectifiers, and power supplies.
  • Create electronic designs and schematics, size components, and conduct theoretical and worst-case stress analysis.
  • Conduct power-systems modeling and analysis, load-flow analysis, and other studies to determine system performance and capacity.
  • Produce engineering materials, including schematics, PCB layouts, tolerance analyses, design notes, FMEA, failure-analysis reports, and technical-review documents.
  • Perform verification testing of electronic components and overall product designs.
  • Maintain power-systems application functionality, including documentation and user interfaces.
  • Design products to meet safety certification standards such as UL and IEC.
  • Coordinate and manage vendor, supplier, and contractor relationships for prototype design.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineering personnel, manufacturing, and field operations.
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned.
