We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Contamination Control Engineer to join our Materials & Process Engineering team at BAE Systems SMS. This role will be responsible for leading contamination control efforts for spacecraft and instruments, ensuring that materials and processes meet stringent contamination requirements. The successful candidate will have a background in contamination control, materials science, and engineering, with experience working in a fast-paced aerospace environment. The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers’ missions. Requirements

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 4 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience in numerical modeling, experimental design and analysis, and technical project leadership.
  • US Citizenship is Required
  • Demonstrated capability to perform quantitative analysis using custom and commercial software tools.
  • Experience with cleanroom practices, vacuum baking, material outgassing databases, and material selection.
  • Understanding of the interaction between molecules and surfaces, including adsorption and desorption processes.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Nice To Haves

  • Highly desirable capabilities include general experience with materials and processes, space flight hardware, vacuum technology, and familiarity with NASA and industry specifications for cleanliness.
  • Experience in launch support, plume and return flux, planetary protection, space environmental effects such as micrometeoroids, atomic oxygen, and photochemical deposition is a plus.
  • Experience in a fast-paced aerospace environment is highly desirable.
  • Applied knowledge of modeling and simulation using MATLAB.
  • Successful applicant must be eligible to obtain a DoW clearance.
  • A current DoW clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however, the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoW clearance within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Contamination Control Plans: Establish and implement contamination control plans for spacecraft and instruments, including budgeting and allocating hardware surface cleanliness and outgassing levels to meet mission performance requirements.
  • Materials and Process Selection: Test and select materials and processes to ensure contamination requirements are met, including outgassing and limiting particle generation.
  • Modeling and Analysis: Perform computer-based modeling of contaminant effects on space flight hardware performance, including analyses of contaminant-caused degradation, molecular transport of contaminants, and particulate contaminant fall-out.
  • Consulting and Support: Provide advice on test methods and procedures for monitoring molecular and particulate cleanliness of space flight hardware and for cleaning such hardware to meet established requirements. Consult with and assist BAE Systems SMS and customer organizations on contamination requirements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Develop or review documentation, including engineering drawings, to include contamination requirements for all program phases from proposal through launch. Analyze data and generate reports on the results of tests.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
