About The Position

Breaking Ground is an organization dedicated to providing housing and services to people experiencing homelessness in New York City, upstate New York, and Connecticut. They operate nearly 4,000 units of supportive housing, which combines affordable housing with services to help residents maintain their homes. Breaking Ground also runs the Street to Home outreach program and transitional housing to assist individuals in moving from street homelessness to permanent homes. The 90 Sands building in DUMBO, Brooklyn, is a 30-story facility offering 491 units of permanent, supportive housing for low-income New Yorkers, people living with HIV/AIDS, and chronically homeless individuals, including those with mental illness. It features a multipurpose room, a digital library/computer lab, and a fitness room. The Center for Urban Community Services provides onsite social services, while Breaking Ground manages property services. The Engineer position is part of the property management department, responsible for maintaining common areas and apartments in residential buildings, including offices, multi-purpose rooms, roof deck, garden, trash collection area, lobby, fitness room, and sidewalks. The role involves basic plumbing, woodworking, and electrical work.

Requirements

Three years of comparable work experience
High School Diploma, GED, Trade School Diploma, or its equivalent required
Skilled at operating power tools
Have basic knowledge of electric and plumbing
Able to lift and move furniture and appliances and stand for many hours at a stretch
Able to climb multiple flights of stairs if elevators fail
