About The Position

Lilly is investing $4.5 billion to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. This facility will combine research and manufacturing to optimize processes, increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact. The Sr. Engineer - Process Safety will support the implementation of process safety management at the Lilly Medicine Foundry, focusing on operational readiness and ongoing compliance. This role involves executing Process Hazard Reviews (PHRs), driving action item resolution, supporting Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs), and providing direct support to engineers, scientists, operators, and maintenance staff for process safety inquiries. The position owns specific aspects of the Foundry's Process Safety Management program. The Foundry operates in a dynamic environment with frequent changes in chemistry and equipment due to clinical urgency and continuous tech transfer. This role is situated at this intersection, requiring close daily collaboration with those introducing changes. It is designed as a development role for a process engineer or an early-career process safety engineer, offering opportunities to deepen expertise in compliance while gaining exposure to API manufacturing chemistry and equipment across all Lilly platforms. The diverse range of chemistry handled at the Foundry provides extensive process safety experience. Mentorship is available from the site PSM lead and Process Engineering, with access to the Lilly Globally Integrated Process Safety Management Technical Team and the Global HSE community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in a Process Engineering or Process Safety Engineering role in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry.
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience participating in Process Hazard Analyses using HAZOP or What-If methodologies. Facilitation or scribe experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with reactive chemistry hazard evaluation, overpressure protection, and relief system basics.
  • Genuine technical curiosity about chemistry and chemical engineering, and an interest in building expertise in process safety.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy in execution.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team of management, production, compliance, science, and engineering professionals.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing tasks and drive them to completion on schedule.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical requirements to non-specialist audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation and execution of equipment and chemistry Process Hazard Reviews, including gathering process safety information, verifying safeguard descriptions, and confirming scope coverage across process areas.
  • Drive resolution of PHR action items, working with action owners in Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Technical Services to close items with quality and confirm they are properly incorporated into the PHR record.
  • Support Operations-led Pre-Startup Safety Review execution.
  • Own and maintain assigned elements of the Foundry Process Safety Management program under the direction of the site PSM lead, and support continuous improvement of those elements.
  • Provide front-line support to Process Engineers, Scientists, Operators, and Maintenance on process safety questions arising from routine operations, troubleshooting, nonroutine activities, and shutdown and startup activities.
  • Support process safety information generation, including chemical reactivity data, equipment design information, and safe operating limits, in partnership with Process Engineers and Scientists.
  • Support Management of Change reviews for new product introductions and process or equipment changes, applying internal and Global HSE requirements and external regulatory requirements.
  • Complete process safety engineering calculations and models with review by senior technical staff.
  • Support event investigations using root cause analysis techniques and contribute to development of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support delivery of process safety and emergency awareness training and communications to site personnel.
  • Support site self-assessments and internal audits, including evidence preparation and gap closure tracking.
  • Contribute to a speak up culture that empowers employees and contractors with the authority to stop work.
