Requirements

  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist registered with APEGA or eligible for membership in APEGA
  • 6-7 years of engineering or geoscience related experience.
  • Experience interpreting policy and legislative guidelines is required.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office and/or various databases or systems is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and English language skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in crucial conversations and conflict management will be considered an asset.
  • Some exposure to environments that have legislative or regulatory authorities will be considered an asset.
  • Certification in Administrative Law will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of the EGP Act and other relevant Acts, Regulations, and Codes when investigating, making decisions on, and administering individual cases.
  • Maintain a professional and constructive attitude in dealing with members, volunteers, the public, legal counsel, and APEGA employees.
  • Deliver on day-to-day activities of a Case Specialist by reviewing evidence, making findings of fact, making decisions on violations, and encouraging voluntary compliance with the EGP Act.
  • Act as Case Specialist on cases assigned to other team members by thoroughly reviewing the evidence, making findings of fact, making decisions on what (if any) violations are present for each case, reviewing communications before they are sent, and participating in calls and meetings related to the case following established department policies, processes, procedures, the EGP Act, and relevant Regulations.
  • Participate in all communications between APEGA and complainants, respondents, APEGA staff, APEGA Council, and legal counsel, properly reviewing correspondence according to department policies and procedures.
  • Identify when there may be imminent risk of harm when evaluating a case and escalating the case according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Work with Case Leads to ensure defensible document management for all case documents using templates and updating databases in a timely fashion.
  • In collaboration with the Unlicensed Practice Manager, decide when to pursue potential violators and develop a case action plan using established processes or develop and use custom methods as required.
  • Work effectively and thoroughly to meet department targets for opening, investigating, and closing cases.
  • Deliver on day-to-day activities of a Case Lead by gathering evidence, investigating cases, and encouraging voluntary compliance with the EGP Act.
  • Act as Case Lead for some cases by managing each assigned case through to completion by gathering evidence, presenting it when required, and maintaining records, evidence, and summaries following acceptable methods of maintaining this documentation identifying opportunities for automating workflows to improve efficiencies.
  • For cases assigned as Case Lead, coordinate all communications between APEGA and complainants, respondents, APEGA staff, APEGA Council, and legal counsel, ensuring correspondence is properly reviewed according to department policies and procedures.
  • Thoroughly gather evidence on all cases assigned as Case Lead that include potential violations using established department policies, processes, and procedures to build a case that proves or disproves a violation, support the Case Specialist in making findings of fact and decisions regarding compliance violations, and engaging higher level management and then legal counsel when appropriate.
  • Work effectively and thoroughly to meet department targets for opening, investigating, and closing cases.
  • Support and assist in the continuous improvement of the department by: actively collaborating with the development, documentation, and education of the department's policies, processes, and procedures, identifying opportunities for automating workflows to improve efficiencies, actively participating in the development and implementation of Unlicensed Practice initiatives, and rectifying and following-up with issues or concerns raised, escalating when necessary.
  • Support and assist the Unlicensed Practice Manager in evaluating complaints and completing risk assessments for cases.
