Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors. Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants. Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal. Other areas of research include radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses and performance metrics. Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs. This position is intended for the shielding and structures group in Department E35 supporting future submarine designs and growth/development of the shielding group. Candidates will be responsible for conducting shielding analyses, development of shield designs, development of shielding construction methods, construction cost and span reduction efforts, and continuing the development of the shielding group. This position regularly communicates and collaborates with NNL and Electric Boat.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 9 years of relevant exempt experience.
  • Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Reactor Plant construction and/or operation.
  • Fundamental knowledge of radiation shield design.
  • Experience creating Python modules and utilizing custom Python libraries.
  • Experience using High Power Clusters in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Experience with Monte Carlo radiation simulation development.
  • Experience with Discrete Ordinate radiation calculation development.
