About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer will join the Mechanical Engineering unit within the Engineering/Architecture Design Division, which provides engineering planning and design services across The Port Authority of NY & NJ. The role focuses on mechanical engineering design for buildings and structures at Port Authority facilities, including HVAC systems, central heating and refrigeration plants, and thermal distribution systems. The position is located at 4WTC and reports to the Principal Mechanical Engineer. The engineer prepares studies, contract drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates, project scopes, design criteria, design-service budgets, and schedules. The position also provides technical advice to Port Authority personnel, audits consultant designs and contract documents, coordinates work across disciplines, reports project status and budgets, and briefs senior staff. Responsibilities include site inspections, equipment condition assessments, review of shop drawings and submittals, resolution of field issues, and commissioning of HVAC systems. The role permits remote work up to one day per week, subject to operational and business needs. The expected compensation range is $96,148 to $153,842, with a midpoint of $124,997.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
At least four years of diversified experience designing HVAC systems for commercial and industrial buildings and transportation facilities, central heating and refrigeration plants, and thermal distribution systems.
Working knowledge of New York State, New York City, and New Jersey building and mechanical codes.
Direct experience preparing contract drawings, technical specifications, and detailed construction cost estimates.
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Revit MEP, and AutoCAD.
Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within the first six months of employment.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Produce quality mechanical design services in accordance with applicable standards, guidelines, codes, and the Quality Control Program.
Prepare contract documents, including drawings, technical specifications, and construction cost estimates.
Produce biddable and constructible contract drawings that meet project scope.
Prepare mechanical engineering scopes of work and budgets for projects or studies.
Perform site inspections and equipment condition assessments at Agency facilities.
Resolve design issues and coordinate designs with other disciplines.
Identify innovation opportunities and make recommendations supported by analysis and consistent with codes and good engineering practice.
Review shop drawings and submittals on schedule and resolve difficult field issues promptly.
Prepare internal and external memorandums, emails, and technical reports.
Audit consultant engineering studies, designs, and construction contract documents.
Perform commissioning of HVAC systems.
Evaluate project scopes and develop design criteria, design-service budgets, and schedules.
Provide technical advice and assistance to facility and other Port Authority personnel on mechanical engineering matters.
Prepare mechanical engineering scopes for requests for proposals, coordinate designs, and report on status, schedules, and budgets.
Brief senior staff.
Prepare mechanical engineering studies involving HVAC systems and central heating and refrigeration plants for buildings and structures at Port Authority facilities.
