About The Position

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. The position is in new submarine propulsion plant design. Specifically, the candidate will work on propulsion plant components, which may include heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and or equipment mounts. The position requires the individual to provide oversight of suppliers with a focus on technical rigor balanced with schedule and cost performance. Individuals in this position must establish and maintain positive stakeholder and customer relationships while balancing competing priorities to ensure trust and alignment of expectations are sustained.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

Extensive experience in propulsion plant components and the steps required to develop, qualify, and manufacture a final design.
Experience with procurement specifications, their development and ensuring suppliers adherence to those requirements.
Proficiency in conflict resolution while maintaining a strong focus on achieving common objectives.
Adept in pivoting due to unforeseen changes while working in a complex technical environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Program management skills.
Ability to adequately train and mentor less experienced engineers.
