Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures. This position is intended for the procedures team within the Coatings Technology and Materials Engineering Department. The individual will work with senior engineers to develop procedures for coatings and surface treatment commodities. Procedure development will involve research into existing specifications, drawings, applicable procedures, and other reference material. In addition, they will interface with craft workers at their job locations either as part of research, problem resolution, or evaluation. Ability to write for different audiences, think critically and logically, take input from other engineers and craft persons, and maintain technical rigor is required. The individual may also need to support other processes such as tool, material, or record management.
