About The Position

Responsible for coordinating and executing geo-structural design of underground excavations, including tunnels and shafts, for major infrastructure projects. Perform geo-structural design for underground excavations including: evaluating geotechnical field and laboratory data; estimating soil and rock geotechnical design parameters; conducting engineering calculations and numerical modeling analyses; and designing temporary and permanent support systems for tunnels and shafts. Support the development of: geotechnical exploration programs; construction drawings; design reports and technical memoranda; and technical specifications for underground construction. Review contractor shop drawings, submittals, and work plans during construction. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive underground engineering solutions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field plus two (2) years of Experience as a Tunnel Engineer or a related occupation involving design of underground excavations.
  • Two (2) years of experience applying strong understanding of soil and rock mechanics for processing field and laboratory test data and determining geotechnical parameters for design of underground excavations.
  • Two (2) years of experience designing shoring systems and temporary support systems for circular and rectangular excavations in soil and rock.
  • Two (2) years of experience designing reinforced concrete structures following ACI codes and standards.
  • Two (2) years of experience designing steel elements for braced excavations such as soldier piles, soldier beams, wales, braces, or struts, following AISC Codes and Standards.
  • Two (2) years of experience in structural analysis and design of tunnels or other underground structures using Plaxis 2D, Plaxis 3D, RS2, Mathcad, and SAP2000.
  • Two (2) years of experience in preparing construction drawings, drafting, and editing using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Two (2) years of experience in settlement analysis for tunnel and shaft excavations using closed form solutions and geotechnical software.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree and six (6) years of experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Illinois.
