About The Position

This is a paid internship/mentorship opportunity for an engineering student to work closely with a licensed Professional Engineer in the Project Development Division of the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT). Requirements

Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned.
Must be able to work at least 10 hours a week when classes are in session.
A valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required.
Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret project plans, agreements, and other contract documents.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in written form.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including geometry, algebra, and trigonometry.
Strong organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

One year of higher education in the Transportation Engineering field.
Experience in or education related to geometric design of highways and streets and project management.
Experience using MS Office, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Experience using CAD software, such as MicroStation or AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

Conduct engineering reviews and prepare technical reports for highway and bridge construction projects.
Review and analyze pavement condition and other existing roadway information, request improvement recommendations, and coordinate with internal staff and other agencies to ensure compliance with design standards and regulations.
Research agency databases and consult with agency employees to analyze existing roadway information, identify needs or deficiencies, and determine and recommend project scope definitions.
Develop detailed project cost estimates by calculating quantities.
Develop and document alternatives for project scope elements.
Assist the Project Scoping Engineer with developing preliminary survey requests.
Perform project site visits to facilitate the development of the scope of work.
Maintain communication between NDOT divisions and district offices.
Update and organize computer files used in the project development phase.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain project status and needs.
Participate in meetings as needed.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Provide assistance to the Project Scoping Engineer and perform other duties as assigned.
