Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with an accredited bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Two years of engineering experience as an Engineer-In-Training.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification.
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training recognized by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic hydrology and hydraulics principles, including stormwater and drainage design
  • Using drainage design and modeling software such as OpenRoads Designer (ORD), HY-8, or HEC-RAS
  • Reviewing engineering plans, calculations, and reports for accuracy and compliance
  • Quality assurance and quality control processes in an engineering setting
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery
  • A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with QA/QC reviews of drainage and stormwater designs, learning to identify errors and ensure compliance with KYTC standards.
  • Participate in team discussions and project meetings to observe how drainage design integrates with roadway, environmental and safety considerations.
  • Review project documentation and calculations under guidance, develop an understanding of proper documentation, modeling assumptions and regulatory requirements.
  • Gain hands-on experience reviewing and interpreting ORD drainage models and outputs, building proficiency in the software and understanding its role in design validation.
  • Support updates to branch checklists, procedures, and standard practices while gaining hands-on experience with KYTC’s quality and safety standards.
