About The Position

The Engineer in Training (EIT) is an entry-level professional position that supports the City's development process by ensuring newly developed areas have robust, sustainable drainage servicing. Working under the guidance of a Professional Engineer, you will help manage long-term fiscal responsibility by ensuring that drainage facilities are cost-effective to operate and maintain. This role is vital for supporting orderly, environmentally friendly urban growth and fostering a cooperative partnership with the development industry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
  • Field and related experience in municipal drainage systems and knowledge of relevant engineering codes
  • Regulatory & Standards Compliance: Adherence to all APEGA regulations and standards and knowledge of the MGA, City/EPCOR standards, City Plan, and CoE Zoning Bylaw
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Proficiency in public engagement, consultation, facilitation, problem-solving, diplomacy, negotiation, and change management
  • Technical & Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex technical information and make timely recommendations, coupled with knowledge of design, construction standards, specifications, bylaws, and legislation related to assigned projects
  • Software & Process Knowledge: Competency with computer systems (Google suite) and knowledge of project management delivery processes

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and recommend acceptance of Neighbourhood Design Reports and Drainage Servicing Reports
  • Review developer planning proposals and land development applications to ensure compliance with bylaws and established servicing concept
  • Help establish cost-effective drainage servicing schemes and equitable cost-sharing arrangements
  • Evaluate the impacts of densification on existing drainage systems to minimize potential negative externalities
  • Attend pre-application meetings to provide high-level feedback on drainage requirements and coordinate with internal groups and EPCOR
  • Address inquiries from the public, developers, and realtors regarding sewer servicing options and resolve on-site stormwater management inquiries at the Development Permit stage
  • Assist in preparing reports and presentations for Council, senior administration, and the public
