About The Position

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an Engineer to perform engineering and construction administration work for the Stormwater Construction Branch within the Utilities Design and Construction Division. DPWES is a diverse, nationally accredited and award-winning public works agency with approximately 1,000 employees providing solid waste, capital facility development, wastewater, stormwater, urban forestry, and land acquisition management services for the most populous county in Virginia. This role is part of the Stormwater Construction Branch, based at the Fairfax County Government Center, located at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. Multiple positions will be filled through this announcement. This position may be eligible for telework following a designated introductory period.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to hear and properly respond to typical construction alarms and verbal warnings on active construction sites.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to produce organized and legible handwritten, typed/computer generated documents including the use of graphics.
  • Must be able to physically navigate rough and slippery terrain found at typical construction sites.

  • Experience in developing and preparing construction specifications.
  • Experience in the close-out of construction contracts, to include closing permits, and resolution of punch list items.
  • Bilingual in English and another language.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and construction administration work for the Stormwater Construction Branch.
  • Manage the bid advertisement and contract award processes.
  • Oversee all aspects of construction contract management for stormwater projects including inspection, testing, code compliance, warranty, and project closeout.
  • Prepare, procure, administer, and manage construction and engineering contracts for site or utility construction.
  • Perform project financial and budgetary planning, tracking, and reporting at the project level.
  • Develop and prepare construction specifications.
  • Manage the close-out of construction contracts, to include closing permits, and resolution of punch list items.
  • Perform field inspections at project construction sites or potential sites for future facilities to make direct observation of work in progress including recognizing unforeseen hazards such as sharp objects, warning signs, slippery surfaces, steep depressions, tripping and fall hazards, sudden movement of heavy equipment.
