About The Position

The Test Engineer III joins Omnicell’s Verification & Validation (V&V) team and contributes to the safety, performance, reliability, and quality of complex medical automation systems. The role owns subsystem and system-level verification strategies, leads hands-on testing, and addresses complex hardware and system problems. It works across engineering disciplines to translate requirements and product risks into effective test methods, investigate failures, strengthen reliability, and improve product design and testing. The position is primarily office- and laboratory-based in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, with hands-on use of test equipment, instrumentation, hardware assemblies, fixtures, software tools, and medical automation systems. Limited travel may be required for cross-site collaboration or field support. The role also provides technical leadership by representing V&V in design reviews and risk-management activities, mentoring junior test staff, and improving test processes and automation.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in verification, validation, reliability testing, hardware/system testing, or integration of complex products.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a similar field.
  • Strong system-level understanding of complex hardware and software-controlled products, with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, sensor/actuator, controls, and software interactions.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory test equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition, and with designing, building, or modifying test fixtures and test setups for complex hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience applying statistical methods to engineering test data and conducting structured root-cause analysis for hardware or system failures.
  • Strong technical documentation and cross-functional communication skills.
  • Basic familiarity with AI-enabled tools such as Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT to support productivity, analysis, and documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on mechatronics experience with motors, motor drives, pneumatics, solenoids, sensors, actuators, wiring, power supplies, embedded controls, or microcontroller-based systems.
  • Experience designing test fixtures, adapters, brackets, or prototype hardware with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or comparable software, including basic GD&T and tolerance considerations.
  • Experience developing or modifying test automation and data-acquisition solutions using LabVIEW, Python, Arduino/microcontrollers, PLCs, or comparable tools; familiarity with DAQ systems and instrument control.
  • Experience with reliability methods such as life or accelerated testing and statistical tools or techniques such as DOE, capability analysis, regression, Weibull analysis, Minitab, or JMP.
  • Medical-device or regulated-industry experience and familiarity with ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 61010, IEC 62304, FMEA, or FTA.
  • Training, certification, or demonstrated experience using generative AI tools to improve efficiency and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead risk-based V&V strategies for assigned subsystems and major features, translating requirements and product risks into verification approaches and partnering with R&D, Quality, Product, Manufacturing, and Automation teams to establish coverage and audit-ready evidence.
  • Develop and improve hands-on test methods, fixtures, and laboratory setups for hardware and integrated systems using instrumentation, sensors, actuators, motors, pneumatics, data acquisition, and software/control interfaces.
  • Lead complex system and integration testing, including performance, stress, robustness, and safety-critical verification; support characterization, life-cycle, and failure-focused reliability testing where appropriate.
  • Apply statistical methods to test data to identify trends, variation, degradation, failure patterns, and product risk.
  • Lead structured failure investigations, apply root-cause analysis to hardware and system issues, and drive corrective actions and retest strategies.
  • Create traceable V&V evidence through test plans, protocols, reports, and traceability matrices; communicate progress, technical risks, failures, and conclusions to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Represent V&V in design reviews and risk-management activities and advocate for stronger design-for-testability.
  • Mentor Test Engineers I/II and Test Technicians and strengthen hands-on problem-solving capabilities across the team.
  • Identify opportunities to expand test coverage, reduce manual effort, improve data quality, and create standardized, reusable test capabilities.
  • Build understanding of assigned products, system architecture, requirements, failure modes, and the V&V/test environment, especially hardware, reliability risks, and mechatronic subsystems.
  • Establish working relationships with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Product, and Automation partners and learn how design, risk, and verification decisions are made.
  • Contribute hands-on testing, statistical analysis, and structured root-cause investigation to an active verification or reliability effort, including investigation of at least one complex issue.
  • Begin owning a defined subsystem or test capability and identify a practical improvement to fixture design, instrumentation, data collection, automation, or reliability coverage.
