Engineer III, Controls Service

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.•Wayne, ME

About The Position

The Engineer III, Controls Service – Steam Turbine is an advanced engineering role primarily accountable for steam turbine controls service support. The work focuses on steam turbine control logic, sequencing, protection interfaces, valve and actuator controls, instrumentation, HMIs, alarms, control system hardware, and field implementation of modifications intended to improve operability, reliability, safety, and maintainability. The engineer evaluates operating issues, develops and implements controls enhancements, adjusts control settings, supports logic and graphics changes, and recommends instrument and control system hardware or software modifications for steam turbine equipment and associated plant systems. The role also supports combined-cycle control interfaces with gas turbine, Balance of Plant, and Heat Recovery Steam Generator systems when steam turbine operation depends on coordinated plant permissives, trips, runbacks, bypass systems, steam admission, condenser vacuum, feedwater, attemperation, or other plant support functions. The engineer performs complex assignments with limited supervision, makes technical recommendations, provides direct customer and field support, and mentors less experienced engineers. The position includes office and on-site customer interaction and coordination with internal engineering, field service, design engineering, LTSA, MHI, vendors, and other stakeholders. Some overnight travel by land and/or air may be required, expected up to 20%. Emergency or customer-critical support outside normal core hours may be required when outage, commissioning, or operating conditions demand it.

  • MS or BS degree in Computer Science, Controls, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university; alternatively, a minimum of ten years of directly related work experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • At least six years of relevant industrial or engineering experience, including controls engineering, logic programming, hardware configuration, turbine controls, commissioning, field service, or service engineering support.
  • Knowledge of steam turbine controls, operating sequences, control logic, turbine protection interfaces, steam admission, valve actuation, auxiliary systems, instrumentation, electrical and control interfaces, alarm and trip response, and plant integration.
  • Experience with digital control systems, distributed control systems, turbine control systems, HMIs, CPUs, communication networks, software configuration, logic testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including industry reports, technical journals, P&IDs, logic diagrams, specifications, procedures, and customer communications.
  • Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, customer reports, and engineering procedures, and to present information effectively to customers, vendors, employees, and groups of varied sizes.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and data analysis needed to support job requirements and technical recommendations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, interpret specifications and technical requirements, evaluate alternatives, and draw valid conclusions under outage, commissioning, and operational support conditions.
  • Advanced personal computer skills, including MS Office applications, data analysis tools, historian or PI-based data review tools, graphics or drawing applications such as Visio, and engineering software used for controls design, troubleshooting, documentation, and reporting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, peers, customers, vendors, and management at all levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gas turbine, BOP, and HRSG control interfaces for combined-cycle fleet support.
  • Familiarity with Netmation, Diasys UPV, Ovation, T-3000, Woodward, or similar control platforms.
  • Familiarity with Steam Turbine Service Engineering information systems and repositories, including Windchill, SharePoint Online / Steam Turbine Team Site, Inspire! Diamond Service Network, Gizumo, Steam Turbine Unit List, WPBs, DRFs, TSRs, O&M manuals, technical bulletins, and field service report repositories.
  • Relevant advanced degrees may be considered based on the applicability of coursework, project experience, and technical scope.

Responsibilities

  • Lead evaluation and enhancement of steam turbine control system operations, including start-up, loading, unloading, shutdown, trip logic, protection interfaces, valve control, auxiliary sequencing, alarm response, and field implementation of logic or graphics modifications.
  • Provide technical support and dispositions to resolve emergent steam turbine controls issues during outages, commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, and operating events, including time-critical support for critical-path activities when required.
  • Interpret steam turbine control narratives, functional logic, control drawings, alarm and trip logic, sequencing, permissives, instrumentation feedback, and control system interfaces to support outage, commissioning, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Prepare functional logic descriptions by extracting requirements from P&IDs, system descriptions, component specifications, operating procedures, sequence documents, and other plant design documents.
  • Prepare and review design documents, including SAMA logic drawings, control narratives, specifications, work procedures, checklists, validation and test plans, commissioning support documents, and as-built documentation.
  • Analyze operational data from steam turbine controls, auxiliaries, valve position feedback, trip and alarm history, permissive status, sequence timing, and related plant systems to identify abnormal behavior, benchmark performance, and develop enhancements.
  • Provide diagnostic support through root cause analysis and recommend improvements to control logic, software, hardware, instruments, actuators, HMIs, CPUs, communication networks, servo systems, valves, protective functions, and related interfaces.
  • Provide technical support to field service and commissioning personnel on design criteria, operating requirements, controls architecture, logic implementation, and service engineering practices.
  • Support Mitsubishi control systems and other plant control platforms, and use Steam Turbine Service Engineering documentation and workflow systems as needed.
  • Support controls integration across steam turbine, gas turbine, BOP, and HRSG equipment and control functions.
  • Represent the company in customer office meetings and on-site interactions with technical expertise, professional judgment, responsiveness, and customer sensitivity.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering, field service, design engineering, LTSA, MHI, vendors, and cross-functional stakeholders to reach consensus on logic, hardware, and system integration changes.
