About The Position

This position may be filled as an Engineer I or one level higher as an Engineer II depending on the experience level of the selected candidate. This Engineer I position provides entry-level civil engineering support for transmission line design in the Duke Energy – Carolinas West region. The role is intended to help build and sustain a qualified pipeline of Civil Engineering talent capable of supporting the structural, foundation, clearance, and field coordination needs that are critical to reliable transmission project execution. Qualified candidates should have a strong civil engineering foundation, sound engineering judgment, and a clear desire to develop the technical skills required for transmission line design. This role will work under the guidance of experienced engineers while supporting design, analysis, foundation-related evaluations, structure coordination, and project execution activities that require disciplined civil engineering capability. Applicants must be able to work effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and possess strong written and oral communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a Civil Engineering degree or demonstrated civil-focused experience. The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in this position perform routine engineering assignments under direct supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop fundamental engineering knowledge, build technical competency, and gain experience applying engineering principles to real-world problems. Work assignments are typically well-defined and closely supervised, with increasing responsibility as proficiency is demonstrated.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

Nice To Haves

  • Internship, co-op, or academic experience in the utility, civil infrastructure, structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, or land development industries
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Exposure to transmission line design theories and principles, including structures, foundations, clearances, site conditions, and constructability considerations
  • Familiarity with transmission line design software (e.g., PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-TOWER)
  • Basic understanding of engineering codes and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and develop solutions with guidance
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Interest in obtaining FE/EIT certification

Responsibilities

  • Assists in providing engineering support in transmission line design, including performing basic calculations and analysis under direction of senior and lead engineers
  • Supports development of conceptual and detailed designs, including structures, foundations, and electrical clearances
  • Assists in preparation of job packages, drawings, technical reports, and other documentation
  • Participates in project teams to support planning, design, and execution activities
  • Supports construction activities by responding to field questions and assisting with issue resolution
  • Learns and applies engineering standards, codes, and company procedures
  • Assists in evaluating design options and identifying solutions to engineering problems
  • Develops technical skills through training, mentoring, and on-the-job experience
  • Maintains accurate records, files, and documentation
  • Builds positive working relationships to support coordination of work activities
