About The Position

The Engineer I - Design researches, designs, builds, and tests new construction and agricultural equipment. Working in a team environment, the role applies engineering principles and CAD tools to develop and document solutions, produce prototype parts, and test design changes that improve machine performance and reliability. The position also builds relationships across Vermeer’s engineering functions and helps meet team goals and metrics.

Requirements

• Four-year college degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Agricultural, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
• Ability to identify the root cause of manufactured or purchased component failures.
• Knowledge of FEA, hydraulics, electronics, engine systems, statistics, strength of materials, and product durability and serviceability.
• Ability to create robust designs, identify changes early in the design process, and recognize design commonality.
• Ability to operate simple mechanics tools and wrenches, assembly hand tools, a drill press, lathe, band saw, and assembly power tools.
• Ability to manage time and resources effectively to meet internal customer needs and schedules, and respond promptly to production questions and crises with solutions.
• Ability to understand material strengths, fatigue strength, and manufacturability to ensure appropriate configurations and materials are used.
• Ability to develop test plans, submit detailed corporate test requests, be present during test execution, and review and process test data.
• Occasional travel is expected.

Responsibilities

• Analyze data and develop CAD models to identify and optimize design opportunities.
• Apply technical knowledge and engineering principles to invent, design, document, build, and test solutions for an assigned industry using CAD tools.
• Use SolidWorks, PDMWorks, ECN tools, and other design tools to produce prototype parts.
• Work with a team to meet team goals and metrics.
• Test design changes to improve machine performance and reliability.
• Build relationships to execute projects successfully and grow knowledge of Vermeer’s engineering functions.
• Develop test plans and detailed corporate test requests, attend test execution, and review and process test data to provide meaningful results.
