About The Position

This position supports the design, development, and integration of electrical and combat systems for U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers. The engineer will validate system and subsystem requirements, manage system interfaces, and ensure compliance with technical and performance standards. Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers, and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution and protection systems.
  • Experience or coursework in one or more of the following: Sonar Systems, Computer/Data System Integration, Radio System Integration, Cabling, Requirement Management and System Engineering Approach, Power Distribution or Power Generation, Control Systems.
  • Ability to read and understand system schematics and drawings.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink or similar modeling tools.
  • Understanding of control systems and PID control loops.
  • Experience or familiarity with submarine or carrier electrical systems and propulsion plants.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 2 years of relevant exempt experience; OR Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with submarine or carrier programs (Virginia Class, CVN Class).
  • SAP, TeamCenter, NGP, or NX software experience.
  • Hands-on experience with acoustic analysis, US Navy mechanical or fluid ship systems, rotating equipment, generators, or motor controls.
  • Systems Engineering or Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience using Cameo or MATLAB Systems Composer.
  • Experience with acoustic transfer functions, making acoustic predictions, performing acoustic or vibration testing, ship or systems engineering, and performing digital signal processing.
  • Understanding of integrated electric systems, microgrids, and renewable energy integration.
  • Prior leadership, testing, or shipyard integration experience.
  • Familiarity with Navy power distribution systems and related components.
  • DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of electrical and combat systems.
  • Establish system and subsystem design requirements from top-level specifications.
  • Manage system interfaces and ensure integrated functionality.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation procedures.
  • Identify, design, and integrate components and subsystems to meet performance requirements.
  • Lead or contribute to the creation of technical deliverables and reports.
  • Coordinate with design, test, and construction teams.
  • Support power generation and distribution system design and integration efforts.
  • Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks.
  • Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
