Engine Calibration Engineer

Hyundai Motor Company•Ypsilanti Charter Township, MI

About The Position

The Electrification Development Team at HATCI is seeking an Engine Calibration Engineer to support development, calibration, and validation of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) propulsion systems for Hyundai Motor Group vehicle programs. The role evaluates, develops, and optimizes engine control strategies and calibration parameters to achieve targets for performance, fuel economy, emissions compliance, drivability, reliability, and long-term durability across diverse operating conditions. The engineer collaborates with internal development teams and global engineering organizations on powertrain calibration development, system integration, performance assessment, benchmarking, testing, and validation. The position contributes to cross-functional projects involving engine controls, powertrain integration, vehicle testing, emissions compliance, and performance optimization for conventional, hybrid, and electrified vehicle programs. The role requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering field and at least five years of relevant experience. An advanced degree is preferred. The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire, hold a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, and be able to support domestic and international travel as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in engine calibration, engine controls development, engine performance development, emissions calibration, or engine durability development.
  • Experience developing and validating engine calibration strategies through engine dynamometer and vehicle-level testing.
  • Strong understanding of internal combustion engine operation, combustion fundamentals, fuel systems, air handling systems, turbocharging systems, and exhaust aftertreatment technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of engine control systems and calibration methodologies, including air-fuel ratio control, spark timing optimization, torque management, knock control, idle control, and thermal protection strategies.
  • Experience developing calibration solutions to achieve engine performance, fuel economy, emissions, drivability, and durability targets.
  • Experience conducting and analyzing engine dynamometer and vehicle-level testing for engine calibration development and validation.
  • Knowledge of engine durability development, reliability assessment, component protection strategies, and root-cause analysis methodologies.
  • Familiarity with emissions regulations and certification requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with calibration and development tools such as ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, CANape, MATLAB/Simulink, CANalyzer, CANoe, Concerto, Cameo, or equivalent engineering tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across global engineering teams.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to support domestic and international travel as required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.
