About The Position

LiquidPiston is seeking a hands-on, mechanically inclined Engine Build Intern to support the assembly, testing, and development of next-generation rotary engines and propulsion systems. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced technicians and engineers in a fast-paced R&D environment, helping to build, modify, and maintain prototype engines that push the boundaries of performance and efficiency. The ideal candidate enjoys working with tools, mechanical systems, and precision assemblies. You are detail-oriented, eager to learn, and excited to gain real-world experience supporting engine development programs from initial assembly through testing and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Coursework, technical training, or hands-on experience in automotive, mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, or related disciplines
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in engines, powertrains, or rotating machinery
  • Experience using hand tools, torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring instruments
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and technical documentation
  • Familiarity with shop practices, mechanical assemblies, and basic machining concepts
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems methodically and follow established procedures
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn and contribute in a dynamic R&D environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on personal vehicle projects, racing teams, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, robotics teams, aviation maintenance, engine rebuilds, or similar hands-on projects is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the assembly, disassembly, inspection, and maintenance of prototype rotary engines and related subsystems
  • Support engine build activities, including fitting components, measuring critical dimensions, and verifying assembly quality
  • Perform cleaning, preparation, and organization of engine components and hardware
  • Assist engineers and technicians with engine installation, setup, and preparation for testing
  • Support troubleshooting efforts by documenting observations and helping diagnose mechanical issues
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, torque tools, measuring equipment, and other shop equipment under supervision
  • Maintain accurate build records, assembly documentation, and parts tracking information
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and workshop environment
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and test teams to support ongoing development programs
