About The Position

The Energy Rater Trainee is responsible for conducting residential energy inspections, diagnostic testing, and field evaluations in accordance with RESNET standards, company procedures, and applicable energy codes. Duties include collecting and documenting inspection data, performing diagnostic testing, preparing reports, and communicating findings to builders, contractors, and internal team members. This is an entry-level position. Prior HERS certification is not required at the time of hire; training and mentorship are provided to support the employee in obtaining the required certification and developing within the organization. NCES provides the training, tools, and mentorship needed to develop the skills required for success as an Energy Rater. Employees will have the opportunity to work toward RESNET Rating Field Inspector (RFI) certification and advance within the organization based on performance, experience, and business needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • RESNET HERS Certification is not required at the time of hire; the employee must have the ability and willingness to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with builders, contractors, and team members.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and standards while working effectively with appropriate training and supervision.
  • Ability to learn and apply technical information, testing procedures, and applicable standards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and other required software.

Nice To Haves

  • Complete required building science training through a RESNET-accredited Training Provider.
  • Complete a minimum of three mentored Rating Field Inspections under the supervision of a qualified mentor.
  • Successfully pass the RESCAZ Exam.
  • Successfully complete a Final Graded Field Evaluation.
  • Upon obtaining certification and completing at least 1 year of experience, employees may be eligible for additional training and advancement opportunities based on performance, experience, and business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct residential energy inspections in accordance with RESNET standards and company procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, including blower door, duct leakage, and HVAC airflow testing.
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting inspection findings.
  • Communicate professionally with builders, contractors, and team members.
  • Maintain inspection tools, testing equipment, and required documentation.
  • Follow all required safety rules, procedures, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software as required.
  • Identify and resolve problems effectively while maintaining strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
