About The Position

Blackstone Energy Services is a Toronto-based, integrated energy transition company that helps public institutions and private sector organizations manage their energy costs, consumption and carbon emissions. We are guided by our impassioned vision to take our clients to net-zero emissions by 2050 and crush their carbon footprint. With our team of like-minded and award-winning climate crusaders, our success is built on developing responsible energy and carbon management solutions. This includes budgeting, energy procurement, cost improvement strategies, utility bill management, climate risk mitigation strategies, consumption efficiencies & conservation efforts, GHG emission reductions, clean infrastructure retrofits and ESG & regulatory reporting. We are a rapidly growing team with an entrepreneurial culture providing superior customer service and customized energy solutions with impact. As an Energy Manager, you will support the delivery of Project SPARK, a multi-year energy program currently underway at Brock University. You will work directly on the Brock campus in close collaboration with both the university facilities team and the Blackstone team to achieve required energy-savings targets. You will combine energy management practices with analytics-informed performance monitoring, BAS control sequence optimization, and retro-commissioning to drive measurable, sustained energy and GHG reductions. This position requires working across a wide range of roles—building operators, Blackstone project teams, controls trades, and the Brock University facilities team—to translate complex building system issues into clear actions and accomplish program goals.

Requirements

  • College diploma or, engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Registered as, or willing to register as, an Energy Manager in Training (EMIT) and complete the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) designation within the first year.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in energy management, building performance, retro-commissioning, or analytics-driven optimization roles.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls, and building operations in institutional and/or commercial environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with facility operators and maintenance teams.
  • Comfortable reviewing BAS trends, sequences of operation, and control strategies.
  • Able to support measurement and verification activities including data collection and coordination with M&V specialists.
  • Proficient with Microsoft tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Comfortable working in active mechanical rooms, rooftops, and plant spaces; able to perform regular site walk-throughs across the Brock campus.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with energy analytics and/or FDD platforms is a strong asset.
  • Ability to use Python or R for data analysis is an asset.
  • Familiarity with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, RETScreen, and project management platforms is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support energy tracking at both the campus and building level using available utility data, submeters, and BAS trends to understand performance, identify abnormal consumption patterns, and verify savings from implemented measures. Develop and track KPIs to ensure energy performance is being maintained and improved.
  • Perform primary assessments by reviewing existing energy studies, commissioning reports, BAS documentation, and prior assessments, and completing walk-throughs of major mechanical systems and process areas to identify performance improvement opportunities.
  • Review and understand mechanical systems and BAS controls, including control sequences, operating schedules, setpoints, and reset strategies. Recommend practical sequencing and scheduling improvements to enhance energy performance while maintaining comfort and reliability.
  • Coordinate proposed changes with the Brock University facilities team and work with controls trades to bring suggested improvements to fruition.
  • Use analytics and FDD outputs to support troubleshooting and retro-commissioning activities. Liaise with BAS technicians and controls contractors to validate findings and support implementation of corrective actions.
  • Review installations of equipment delivered through Project SPARK to verify conformance with energy saving requirements and design intent.
  • Identify, assess, prioritize, and recommend energy efficiency and GHG reduction opportunities across operational, maintenance, retro-commissioning, and capital measures. Develop action plans linking issues to fixes and projects, and support business cases and applications to Save on Energy, Strategic Energy Management (SEM), and other programs to maximize available funding.
  • Work collaboratively with Blackstone project managers and construction managers on the implementation of energy conservation measures through technical scoping, sequence review, commissioning and re-commissioning support, and post-implementation performance checks.
  • Support M&V plans across the campus, including collecting and maintaining baseline and post-retrofit data to document savings outcomes and inform continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate effectively with building operators, trades, BAS technicians, project teams, and Brock University leadership to summarize issues, explain technical problems clearly, and drive timely decision-making. Deliver practical training and coaching to help sustain improvements.
  • Reporting – Maintain a project registry of energy savings opportunities, with key project data such as estimated savings and costs, status tracking, ownership, and next steps, and complete other reporting requirements associated with the Energy Manager program.
