About The Position

As the Energy & Special Projects Manager, you will serve as the organization's energy subject matter expert and strategic leader for energy optimization initiatives. You'll identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption, improve equipment and operational efficiencies, and implement innovative solutions that positively impact both sustainability goals and the bottom line. Working closely with Finance, Store Operations, Construction, Legal, and external partners, you'll evaluate and execute energy-saving projects from concept through implementation. You'll also lead a small team, build compelling business cases, negotiate vendor agreements, manage project approvals, and ensure the organization remains at the forefront of industry trends and emerging technologies. Success in this role requires a balance of analytical thinking, technical knowledge, financial acumen, leadership, and relationship-building skills.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Facilities Management, Business, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
Five or more years of relevant industry experience.
Two to five years of experience in energy management, sustainability, facilities operations, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience managing projects from planning through execution.
Strong knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and building systems.
Experience leading and developing teams.
Excellent analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business recommendations.
Strong financial acumen and experience developing ROI-driven business cases.
Outstanding communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at multiple levels.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Ability to balance immediate operational needs while advancing long-term strategic objectives.
Working knowledge of energy distribution, utility markets, and operational cost drivers.
Commitment to safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar industry certification.
Experience managing energy programs across large multi-site operations.
Expertise in utility procurement, demand response programs, or energy benchmarking.
Experience with building automation systems, energy management software, or advanced analytics platforms.
Strong contract negotiation and vendor management experience.
Background in capital planning, facilities engineering, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
Experience developing sustainability initiatives that deliver both environmental and financial benefits.
Proven success leading cross-functional teams and influencing senior leadership decisions.
Knowledge of renewable energy technologies, electrification initiatives, or emerging energy solutions.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute short- and long-term energy management strategies that improve operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
Identify, evaluate, and implement energy conservation and demand management initiatives across the enterprise.
Establish company-wide energy reduction goals and monitor progress toward achieving targeted results.
Analyze energy usage data, utility spending, and operational performance to identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
Maintain and improve equipment and facility performance through ongoing monitoring and optimization efforts.
Research emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to determine potential applications and benefits.
Build financial analyses and business cases to support energy-related investments and capital projects.
Lead energy audits, evaluate existing programs, and recommend improvements based on findings.
Research, evaluate, negotiate, and manage vendor relationships, contracts, and project agreements.
Prepare project documentation, approval requests, presentations, and funding justifications.
Partner with Finance, Store Operations, Construction, Legal, and other stakeholders to successfully execute projects and initiatives.
Track and report project performance, energy savings, and return on investment metrics.
Ensure compliance with applicable certifications, authorizations, licenses, and regulatory requirements.
Lead, coach, and develop a team of up to three direct reports.
Travel up to 30% to support project implementation, vendor partnerships, and field operations.
