About The Position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has multiple openings for an Energy/Environmental Technology Researcher II in Berkeley, CA. This role involves supporting discussions with diverse stakeholders, overseeing technical assistance provision, preparing and presenting technical analyses, conducting research on energy efficiency tools and strategies, developing project ideas on building emissions reduction, contributing to technical guidance on Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS), advanced building automation, and grid-interactive and high-performance building control strategies, and organizing and analyzing large datasets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Energy, Chemical, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related field and 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or related occupation. Alternatively, employer will accept a Master’s degree in Mechanical, Energy, Chemical, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related field and 3 years of experience in the job offered or related occupation. Employer will accept any suitable combination of education and experience.
  • Primary and/or secondary research in the analysis of energy/environmental equipment and commercial HVAC systems.
  • Collection, analysis, and synthesis of structured and unstructured datasets, including building energy and power consumption data, energy costs and projections data, and equipment performance metrics derived from metering and sensor data.
  • Presentation of data analysis results in a way that is easily understood by a diverse audience.
  • Energy efficiency, electrification, grid-integration and decarbonization of commercial buildings including technologies, design, and delivery processes, operations.
  • Understanding of commercial building market stakeholder dynamics including the understandings, considerations, and priorities of building owners, property manager, facility engineers, and third-party consultants.
  • Building HVAC advanced control strategies and data analytics concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Support discussions with diverse stakeholders, including technical assistance managers (TAMs), sustainability leaders, energy managers, and facilities engineers, through web-meetings and in-person workshops.
  • Oversee the provision of technical assistance by a cohort of TAMs, address issues as they arise, and refine technical assistance processes and reporting.
  • Prepare, present, and promote technical analyses and sustainable practices to diverse stakeholders and audiences, engaging in impactful actions to address energy and cost reduction goals within the industry.
  • Conduct primary (e.g., phone interviews) and secondary (e.g., literature review) research on energy efficiency tools and strategies, and document results in engaging ways such as presentations, technical briefs, case studies, and product classification matrices.
  • In collaboration with the principal investigator, develop project ideas on building emissions reduction, responsive to DOE and Berkeley Lab priorities, building sector needs and opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development of technical guidance and resources related to Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS), advanced building automation, and grid-interactive and high-performance building control strategies.
  • Organize and work with large amounts of data using various types of software (such as spreadsheets, and database programs) to perform analyses and develop charts of results.

Benefits

  • The expected salary for this position is $135,970 - $138,420 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.
