Energy Associate

Fluidstack•Austin, TX
•$128,000 - $156,000

About The Position

Fluidstack is hiring an Energy Associate to diligence prospective data-center power sites across grid interconnection and behind-the-meter generation, producing go/no-go recommendations quickly. The role owns delivered-cost-of-power models for candidate sites, covering grid tariffs and network upgrade exposure as well as behind-the-meter gas basis, transport, heat rate, and availability. The Associate maintains the definitive status of each site, including grid queue position and study milestones, contracted fuel and generation status, and outstanding next steps. The role also manages diligence files for live sites, including tariff filings, interconnection studies, pipeline and interconnect agreements, air permits, offtake term sheets, and generation specifications. It supports Leads in active negotiations with term-sheet comparisons, sensitivity analysis, counterparty and credit screens, and timely decision-making analysis. The Associate tracks relevant markets and policy, including ISO large-load processes, rate cases, tariff changes, and gas fundamentals in target basins.

Requirements

  • Have built a model used to inform a trade, investment, or capital commitment, and be able to defend its assumptions under pressure.
  • Be able to closely review a contract, tariff, or study report and identify the terms that materially affect economics.
  • Be able to turn an unorganized data room into a concise recommendation identifying the key decision factor.
  • Have identified and raised a material error in another person's work before it reached a decision maker.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to become useful quickly in an unfamiliar market or asset class.
  • Document findings promptly so that site files do not depend on information held only in one's memory.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on commodities trading or analytics desks in gas or power, including basis, storage, transport, or fundamentals.
  • Experience in origination and structuring, particularly PPA and offtake work.
  • Experience with large-load or generator interconnection in one or more ISOs, including ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, or WECC.
  • Transaction diligence experience in M&A, project finance, or infrastructure investing.
  • Experience in behind-the-meter or distributed generation development.
  • Experience with modeling and data tools such as Python, SQL, ICE and CME data, Wood Mackenzie, or Velocity Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Diligence prospective sites for grid interconnection and behind-the-meter generation, and deliver go/no-go recommendations.
  • Build and own delivered-cost-of-power models across candidate sites and power-supply paths.
  • Track each site's status, including grid queue position, study milestones, contracted fuel and generation position, and required next steps.
  • Maintain thorough diligence files for live sites, including tariffs, interconnection studies, agreements, permits, term sheets, and generation specifications.
  • Support Leads in negotiations through term-sheet comparisons, sensitivity analyses, counterparty and credit screens, and decision-driving analysis.
  • Monitor ISO large-load processes, rate cases, tariff changes, and gas fundamentals in target basins.
