About The Position

Atelier Ten is seeking a full-time Design Staff member specializing in Energy Analysis for its New York City office. The role contributes to projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in the built environment. As part of an interdisciplinary environmental design consulting group and the Energy Analysis practice, the employee will produce technical deliverables, perform whole-building energy modeling, develop building-system engineering strategies, consult on projects, and support decarbonization efforts. This is an onsite position and is not remote. The role supports work on a variety of projects, including offices, higher education buildings, laboratories, and large masterplans. It involves applying internal methodologies aligned with ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards; developing energy models; supporting sustainability assessments and analyses; collaborating with architects and design teams; attending site visits and project meetings; presenting analyses to stakeholders; and maintaining internal databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.

  • 2–5 years of professional work experience in building energy analysis or high-performance HVAC design at the commercial building scale.
  • Experience with specialized building energy simulation software.
  • Ability to develop and articulate engineering problems related to HVAC system design, building envelope performance, passive conditioning strategies, building energy use, and carbon emissions.
  • Experience with or understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems design for commercial buildings.
  • Experience applying ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189 to new and/or existing building projects.
  • Experience with green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, or Living Building Challenge, and energy code compliance such as IECC or 90.1 at various design stages.
  • Experience gathering and documenting energy model inputs and outputs, interpreting results, and documenting analyses in written and graphical formats.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Curiosity, proactivity, self-motivation, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, openness to learning, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to varied audiences.

  • PE or EIT in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.
  • Training in statistics, data analytics, advanced algorithms, or coding.
  • BEMP, LEED AP+ specialty, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, or similar credential.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply internal methodologies that follow ASHRAE 90.1 energy analysis protocols and other industry standards for new and existing building and planning projects.
  • Develop shoe-box and whole-building energy models using IES-VE, EnergyPlus, and/or eQUEST to support energy analyses and design optioneering.
  • Support senior staff with sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analyses, energy benchmarking, climate impact mitigation strategies, and life-cycle cost analyses.
  • Collaborate with architects and design team members to recommend improvements in energy performance and carbon emissions.
  • Assist with energy analysis work, including building simulations, carbon emissions calculations, annual cost analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Attend site visits and project meetings, and present analyses to stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain in-house databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.
