About The Position

Atelier Ten is seeking a full-time Design Staff member specializing in Energy Analysis for its New York City office. The role collaborates on projects to achieve energy efficiency and carbon-emissions reduction goals. It produces technical deliverables, performs whole-building energy modeling, develops engineering strategies for building systems such as HVAC, and consults on projects. The position is part of an interdisciplinary environmental design consulting group and a key member of the company’s Energy Analysis practice. It is not a remote position. Projects range from offices, higher education buildings, and laboratories to large masterplans. The role applies internal methodologies informed by ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards to new and existing building and planning projects across locations and climate zones. It supports sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analysis, energy benchmarking, climate-impact mitigation strategies, and life-cycle cost analysis. The Design Staff member collaborates with architects and other design team members, supports colleagues with energy analyses and emissions and cost calculations, attends site visits and meetings, presents analyses to stakeholders, and maintains in-house databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or Sustainable Building Design.
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in building energy analysis or high-performance HVAC design at commercial-building scale.
  • Experience using specialized building energy simulation software.
  • Ability to develop and articulate engineering problems related to HVAC system design, building-envelope performance, passive conditioning strategies, building energy use, and carbon emissions.
  • Experience with or understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems design for commercial buildings.
  • Experience applying ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189 to new and/or existing building projects.
  • Experience with green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, or the Living Building Challenge, and energy-code compliance such as IECC or 90.1 at various design stages.
  • Experience gathering and documenting energy-model inputs and outputs, interpreting results, and documenting analysis in written and graphical formats.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Curiosity, proactivity, self-motivation, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and willingness to learn across multiple projects.
  • Interest in improving existing processes and building tools, and ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts to varied audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • IES-VE and/or eQUEST experience is preferred.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) credential in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.
  • Training in statistics, data analytics, advanced algorithms, or coding.
  • BEMP, LEED AP+ specialty, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, or similar credential.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply internal methodologies that follow ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards for new and existing building and planning projects.
  • Develop shoe-box and whole-building energy models using IES-VE, EnergyPlus, and/or eQUEST to support energy analyses for building design and optioneering.
  • Support senior staff with sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analysis, energy benchmarking, climate-impact mitigation strategies, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Collaborate with architects and design team members to recommend improvements to energy performance and carbon emissions.
  • Assist colleagues with energy-analysis work, including building simulations, carbon-emissions calculations, annual cost analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Attend site visits and project meetings, and present analyses to stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain in-house databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.
