About The Position

The Energetics Tool Engineer for solid rocket motor (SRM) and aerospace propulsion programs is responsible for the concept, design, engineering, fabrication drawings, inspection requirements, procurement requirements, verification requirements, and fabrication support for tooling and equipment used in manufacturing solid rocket motors, specifically energetic operations. The role is part of Strategic Systems Operations and reports to the Special Tooling Group Manager. It is based in Folsom, California, with onsite or hybrid work options in Folsom, California, or Reno, Nevada. The engineer manages assigned tooling projects and coordinates design and fabrication activities to meet program cost and schedule requirements. The role works with internal customers, manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to define, develop, inspect, and support tooling, while ensuring quality, delivery, cost, safety, and manufacturing requirements are met. It also contributes to continuous improvement, standardized tooling documentation and practices, systems implementation, and mentorship of junior designers and peers. Travel up to 15% may be required, including overnight trips within the United States for program and supplier support. The role requires the ability to lift, move, or carry items or equipment up to 50 pounds. A U.S. DoD security clearance must be obtainable and maintainable; U.S. citizenship is required, and an active Secret clearance is preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 10 to 15 years of tool design or engineering experience, with emphasis on solid rocket live operations.
  • Working knowledge of casting, curing, and cutting operations in solid propellant processing, including tooling and equipment.
  • Experience designing tools for cast cores, cast distribution, stripping cast cores, attended and remote propellant cutting or trimming, fixtures and stands used in propellant environments, and lifting, handling, and transport of loaded motors.
  • Proficiency with mechanical design CAD software such as SolidWorks, NX, or similar.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and metrology principles.
  • Experience with finite element analysis practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and validate fixtures, jigs, and gauges for precision assembly and inspection.
  • Experience with tooling materials selection, machining processes, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with tooling configuration management and change-control processes.
  • Previous use of an MES or EAM/CMMS system to manage tool fabrication and maintenance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Ability to lift, move, or carry items or equipment up to 50 pounds.
