This role is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for the infection prevention of endoscope preparation, which is critical for patient safety. By reprocessing endoscopes, the technician must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to preclean, leak test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines, regulations, and manufacturer's instructions for use. The technician also demonstrates responsibilities by providing assistance to nurses and physicians during procedures, including all types of endoscopic procedures and emergencies, utilizing endoscopes, accessories, and therapeutic equipment. They may assist in obtaining biopsy specimens and polyps under the direct supervision of an RN. This role also involves maintaining professional working relationships, promoting positive public relations, seeking guidance when needed, being receptive to feedback, and maintaining accurate records and logs related to scope reprocessing and QA monitoring. Specimen handling and labeling are also part of the responsibilities. The technician observes and maintains isolation and standard precautions, follows hand washing guidelines, uses two patient identifiers, and ensures patient safety and comfort. They are responsible for maintaining a neat and safe environment, including hallways and storage closets. The role requires initiating and maintaining a friendly, professional, courteous, and respectful rapport with patients, responding to their needs in a timely manner, and following HIPAA guidelines. Enhancing the attitude and teamwork of the unit to facilitate a positive work environment is also key, working as a team member by accepting assignments and demonstrating flexibility. Professional practice responsibilities include maintaining skill levels through yearly competencies and training, pursuing personal and professional growth, attending staff meetings, and following HR policies. The technician follows the daily schedule to ensure the proper endoscope is available, sets up and tests the procedure room, troubleshoots equipment, and efficiently turns over rooms between cases, including pre-cleaning scopes. Stocking rooms with necessary supplies and preparing them for the following day are also duties. This is a Per Diem position at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in NJ.
