Endoscopy Technician II
About The Position
The Endoscopy Technician II performs delegated patient-care activities and supports the care team in GI procedure rooms. Under physician or nurse supervision, the technician assists with direct patient care during procedures and provides physicians with equipment for colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and other ancillary procedures in Mayo Clinic endoscopy procedural areas. Duties also include patient-care responsibilities in recovery rooms and endoscope reprocessing rooms. At sites with an Endoscopy Technician I position, the technician is also responsible for maintaining competency in endoscope reprocessing and high-level disinfection. The role requires adapting to changing assignments, sometimes at short notice, while prioritizing patient care and teamwork. The technician must be able to work independently, troubleshoot equipment in procedural areas, and follow established procedure guidelines. Commitment to Endoscopy is required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- At least one year of Endoscopy Technician I experience, or two years of direct patient-care experience, or one year of central service/sterile processing technician experience and six months of direct patient-care experience.
- Knowledge of or experience with electronic applications.
- Knowledge of surgical or central service functions, including high-level disinfection, intravenous catheterization, phlebotomy, and/or GI endoscopy equipment and procedures.
- Successful completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, Phlebotomy Technician program, or equivalent health-care experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions and multitask.
- Ability to work independently and/or in a team setting.
- Experience performing multiple tasks within a work shift.
- Ability to work flexible hours to meet the demands of the work unit.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in the work setting.
- Excellent communication skills.
- BCLS certification is required within 60 days of hire.
Responsibilities
- Perform delegated activities related to patient care and overall team support in GI procedure rooms.
- Assist with direct patient care during procedures under the supervision of a physician or nurse.
- Assist physicians with equipment used for colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and other ancillary procedures.
- Perform patient-care duties in recovery rooms and endoscope reprocessing rooms.
- At applicable sites, maintain competency in endoscope reprocessing and high-level disinfection.
- Adapt to changing daily assignments, including changes made at short notice.
- Work independently and troubleshoot equipment in the procedural area.
- Follow established procedure guidelines and prioritize patient care and teamwork.
- Maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) competency.
