About The Position

A unit-based Technician that will provide direct assistance in patient care of a diverse ED patient population. This position will also be directly responsible to perform duties such as Point of Care Testing, General Phlebotomy, and Sample Collection. Within the scope of practice of the EMT Intermediate/Advanced, this role promotes and establishes criteria for the delivery of quality care. Under the direction of Licensed Nursing Staff, the employee provides assistance and performs care within the scope of practice. This position will care for patients in the adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups. The employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population-specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures.

Requirements

  • Current EMT Intermediate or EMT Advanced license in the State of Georgia.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certificate or Diploma from Accredited Learning Institute in Emergency Medical Technology (Must have to meet requirements for POC testing).
  • EMT with at least one (1) year of experience providing direct care to patients in the pre-hospital, ED, or Office environment preferred.
  • Must have documented experience and proficiency in peripheral venous sampling and IV Access.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide input and feedback into process improvement activities.
  • Knowledge of Basic Medical Skills and Equipment within Scope of EMT.
  • Ability to work Autonomously, anticipating needs of patients and Team.
  • Excellent clinical knowledge and skills as demonstrated by competency assessment.
  • Ability to teach and give verbal and written instruction in a comprehensive manner.

Responsibilities

  • Abides by the patient safety standard guidelines to ensure safety of patient and self.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, clean, and therapeutic environment.
  • Prioritizes work load appropriately as evidenced by the immediate attention to those with actual or potential urgency.
  • Reports vital signs / patient updates documentation as appropriate on all assigned patients.
  • Promptly identifies and reports physical and mental status changes to licensed staff.
  • Recognizes and reports conditions that affect or compromise technical aspects of the test/procedure.
  • Participates in the assessment of patient's physical and emotional needs and communicates findings to appropriate health care provider.
  • Demonstrates competency and proficiency in preparing, assisting and discharging of patients.
  • Maintains a positive public relations image as a caring, courteous, attentive, and efficient employee.
  • Stays informed of shift activities and attends staff meetings.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of dysrhythmias and conduction abnormalities with recognition of potential risks.
  • In support to ED Clinicians, will be required to demonstrate understanding of the protocol for managing, promoting, and obtaining an interpretation of STEMI EKGs.
  • Performs satisfactorily in mock codes and other emergency drills or events.
  • Correctly performs routine venipuncture and peripheral IV access within scope of practice.
  • Correctly performs micro-collection and other special collection techniques.
  • Ensures the integrity of submitted clinical specimens.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics, provides for positioning, mobility, hygiene, ADL and Comfort needs.
  • Attains proficiency with all required IT systems to support the clinical staff.
  • Maintains Licensure as EMT Intermediate or Advanced in accordance with Georgia Office of EMS Requirements.
  • Uses performance measures to assess and improve the delivery of research-based practices.
  • Promotes outcomes that demonstrate delivery of high quality and safe care.
  • Performs assessments of the unit to provide context for problem identification and action.
  • Implements quality / safety strategies based on current data, analysis, and risk anticipation.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous quality improvement within the unit.
  • Evaluates patient handoffs and transitions of care to improve outcomes.
  • Uses a variety of datasets appropriate for the patient population, setting, and organization to assess individual and unit outcomes of care; to include HCAPS, NDNQI, population registries, and others as necessary.
  • Facilitates modification of nursing interventions based on risk anticipation and other evidence to improve outcomes.
  • Facilitates the use of daily management systems to measure and respond to variances in quality and safety processes. To include standard work, coaching, huddles, recognition, and improvement methods.
