This employee performs paramedic-level life support, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care in the County Emergency Medical Services unit. The role performs advanced life-support work in an approved mobile medical unit, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, rescues victims, and provides advanced emergency care, including life-sustaining treatment, at the scene and while transporting patients to area hospitals. The employee applies necessary treatment to sick or injured persons and transports them to a medical facility as part of a response unit, with responsibility for the medical care administered to the patient. The work requires considerable independent judgment to assess patient conditions and provide short-term relief. Employees face ordinary hazards of emergency rescue work, including possible exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases, and must follow OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens. Work follows established EMT and medical procedures and departmental and local medical director-approved protocols. The employee works under a shift supervisor. Performance is evaluated through peer review, conferences, observation, discussion of procedures at emergency scenes, and public feedback.
