About The Position

Denver Health is seeking a mission-driven EMT for their Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). The CDU is a new, short-stay unit within emergency services, designed for patients who have undergone initial evaluation in the emergency department. Patients typically stay between 8-16 hours and receive ongoing medical treatments and assessments from a multidisciplinary team. This unit offers nurses autonomy in caring for complex patients, serving as a transition between the emergent and inpatient environments. The nursing ratio is 1:5, with healthcare techs at a 1:8 ratio on days.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • No previous experience required.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
  • EMT - CO - State of Colorado Required
  • IV Authorization certification approved by CDPHE or AEMT-EMT Advanced - CO - State of Colorado Required or EMTP-EMT Paramedic - CO - State of Colorado Required
  • Knowledge of Emergency Department practices.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skill set required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the RN in carrying out the plan of care for assigned patients.
  • Acts appropriately in critical situations.
  • Obtains vital signs and differentiates normal from abnormal findings. Reports abnormal values or conditions to the RN (e.g., abnormal VS, bleeding, safety concerns, family issues).
  • Under direct supervision of the RN and as delegated by the physician, implements care based on prioritized patient needs, assists with the plan of care with measurable outcome and goals for the patient/family, and participates in the discharge planning process.
  • Assists with the care coordination and safe transportation of patients through the ED visit. Is able to transport low risk monitored patients through the hospital.
  • Performs transportation responsibilities when requested; transporting patients from one area to another; delivering laboratory specimens, blood products, medications and other hospital/medical items to the requested departments as needed; and includes access to the pneumatic tube system to transport items, including blood products and medications, to and from the tube and the desired location.
  • Documentation of completed tasks, vital signs, procedures and notes in EHR.
  • Documentation of patient safety observation in accordance with DH’s policies and procedures.
