About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Shift Battalion Chief, this position provides proactive assistance and rapid, initial emergency response to a designated highway safety route and/or area. This role utilizes a dual operational model combining highway patrol services with immediate medical capabilities. Applicants must be aware that this position requires active patrolling of a designated high-risk corridor from within an ambulance or remaining in a designated staged area from 0600 to 1800 hours daily. This position operates on a 48/96 schedule, with a mandatory shift change occurring every 48 hours at 1900 hours. The primary objective is to drastically reduce response times and prevent secondary incidents through high visibility and rapid intervention. There shall be three (3) Levels of the Single Role EMS Specialist: Highway Safety Team (HST) positions. Level 1 will be an EMT-Basic, Level 2 will be an Advanced EMT, and Level 3 will be a Paramedic. These levels assist in identifying the employees pay grade and internal department policies, procedures, clinical practice guidelines, state, and federal laws will determine and guide each licensures level of clinical practice abilities. These positions do not qualify for Advanced EMT or Paramedic incentive pay offered due to the licensure being required for the position.

Requirements

  • EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic licensure (depending on the level of the position).
  • Awareness that the position requires active patrolling of a designated high-risk corridor from within an ambulance or remaining in a designated staged area from 0600 to 1800 hours daily.
  • Ability to operate on a 48/96 schedule with a mandatory shift change every 48 hours at 1900 hours.
