About The Position

These positions perform skilled emergency medical work involving patient assessment, treatment, transport, and operational readiness in a 911 emergency response environment. Employees function as part of a professional EMS team providing Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) care to the citizens and visitors of McDowell County. Selected applicants will be hired and compensated based on current certification level, qualifications, experience, and operational need. Assignment, shift placement, and station assignment are subject to operational need. Selected applicants may be subject to an applicable probationary period in accordance with county personnel policy. Salary will be based on certification level, qualifications, experience, and the approved McDowell County pay plan.

Requirements

  • EMT: Current North Carolina EMT certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • EMT: Current AHA BLS certification.
  • EMT: Valid North Carolina driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • EMT: Completion of FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses.
  • Advanced EMT: Current North Carolina Advanced EMT certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Advanced EMT: Current AHA BLS certification.
  • Advanced EMT: Valid North Carolina driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Advanced EMT: Completion of FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses.
  • Paramedic: Current North Carolina Paramedic certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Paramedic: Current AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Paramedic: Valid North Carolina driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Paramedic: Completion of FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses.
  • Successful completion of required background check, drug screening, and MEDPAT.
  • Full-time EMT and AEMT employees must enroll in an accredited Paramedic program within 90 days of hire/promotion and remain in good standing within the program.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous 911 emergency response experience.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Field Training Officer, preceptor, leadership, or specialty team experience.
  • Additional certifications such as Critical Care Paramedic, Community Paramedicine, or Hazardous Materials Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Operate ambulances and emergency vehicles safely in accordance with county policy and state law.
  • Assess, treat, monitor, and transport patients experiencing medical, traumatic, behavioral, or psychiatric emergencies.
  • Provide patient care consistent with North Carolina OEMS protocols and certification level.
  • Assist with or perform advanced procedures including cardiac monitoring, IV/IO access, medication administration, airway management, and other ALS interventions as authorized by certification level.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic patient care documentation.
  • Conduct daily vehicle, equipment, and supply checks to ensure operational readiness.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital staff, dispatchers, and coworkers.
  • Participate in continuing education, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, county policies, and safety standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of EMS operations.
