About The Position

The City of Woodbury is seeking applicants with exceptional character for the position of EMS/Fire Cadet. The Cadet Program provides a positive training environment that encourages professional development through exposure to and experience in the various aspects of a full-time EMS/Fire department. EMS/Fire Cadets will receive on-the-job training in firefighting, hazardous materials operations, and emergency medical services (EMS). Cadets will observe and participate in department responses to emergency calls for service under the mentorship of full-time staff. Cadets will assist in the preparation and implementation of department-sponsored events, public education, and other community engagement opportunities. Cadets will contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of department equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Cadets will additionally provide support to administrative staff and perform other department duties as required. The EMS/Fire Cadet is a non-sworn uniformed member of the Public Safety Department directly responsible to the Director of Public Safety, shift supervisor, or their designee. The maximum length of this position will be three (3) years.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older by date of hire.
Must have earned either a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
Must demonstrate interest in a career in firefighting and EMS.
Must successfully pass City-administered initial and periodic physical agility test, physical examination, stress test, drug screen, pulmonary function test, and psychological evaluation.

Understanding of and experience with diverse communities, including individuals of various racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Proficiency in a language other than English.
Completion or current enrollment in a Fire, Emergency Technician, or Paramedic certification program.

Responsibilities

Works in partnership with other EMS, police, and fire personnel.
Obtains, maintains, and expands knowledge and skills in the areas of fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, EMS, and fire prevention.
Participates in department-sponsored simulated and classroom training.
Attends fire/EMS programs for continuation of education.
Performs fire prevention activities including public safety education and community risk reduction efforts.
Assists in public safety programs that are oriented to EMS, fire prevention, education, and public relations.
Takes oral and written orders as assigned by EMS/Fire Command personnel or their designees.
Performs assigned duties in maintaining department property and facilities.
Performs these tasks individually and/or in unison with other Public Safety personnel.
Operates equipment and apparatus in an efficient and safe manner.
Maintains department apparatus and equipment.
Transports department vehicles and equipment for repair or cleaning.
Employs proper procedure for use, inspection, care, and maintenance of department equipment.
Performs office duties as needed.
Performs all other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned or apparent.
