About The Position

This position is responsible for the administrative oversight of a major work unit or a combination of smaller units within the Department of Labor and Training. Emphasis is placed on implementing strategies for customer service delivery, coordinating employee training programs, and promoting new or changed customer services to user populations. The role involves working under the direct supervision of an Associate Director or Assistant Director, with significant latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed through meetings and reports to ensure compliance with directives, rules, and laws, and to uphold the mission of the unit(s). The position also involves planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of professional, technical, and clerical staff.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and policies of the Department of Labor and Training.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Wagner-Peyser Act, Job Training Partnership Act, and other programs relating to the training and employment of Rhode Island's workforce.
  • Thorough knowledge of programs and federal legislation administered by the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.
  • Ability to coordinate programs.
  • Ability to plan and develop strategies and procedures to implement new programs within the department.
  • Ability to work effectively with interested individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Ability to assess program success and adjust them to suit department objectives.
  • Graduation from a college of recognized standing with a specialization in Business or Public Administration, Communication, Marketing, or a closely related field.
  • Considerable experience in a position responsible for employment and training programs, including the planning, development, and promotion of such programs.
  • Any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specific supervision to personnel engaged in customer service functions at the Department of Labor and Training.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive program plan providing desired results for a work unit or units within the Department of Labor and Training.
  • Oversee the implementation of customer service programs and make changes or adjustments as warranted for compliance with unit(s) mission.
  • Oversee proper training for staff in customer service delivery and promotion.
  • Assist in the development of customer service promotions and their introduction to appropriate user populations.
  • Ensure unit(s) staff complies with procedures, policies, and regulations related to programs administered through Federal and State statutes and other services provided by the Department of Employment and Training.
  • Perform related work as required.
