About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN), a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting for a full-time Employment Specialist for the Singles Program at our Mather Community Campus. VOA-NCNN is a ministry of service that includes nearly 500 paid, professional employees dedicated to helping those in need to rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Founded locally in 1911, VOA-NCNN is one of the largest providers of social services in the region, operating more than 40 programs including housing, employment services, substance abuse, and recovery services to families, individuals, veterans, seniors, and youth. The Employment Specialist is responsible for the efficient and compassionate operation of the program, assuring quality service to all residents through the coordination of program functions and specific assistance to other program staff. By successfully collaborating with partner service providers and staff, the Employment Specialist is responsible for assuring quality service to all residents and the performance of all other daily work duties as it relates to overall organizational operations. Responsible for working with participants on job search skills and activities, managing job matching and placement activities with employers and participants, continued assessment of job readiness, and facilitation of job clubs/alumni groups. The Employment Specialist will also provide retention services to the employees.

Requirements

  • Two years of successful experience in the delivery of human services or any combination of education, training and experience, which would provide the knowledge and ability to complete the duties outlined above.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions and to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to foster youth population, homelessness, substance abuse, minorities, and people with disabilities.
  • Must be able to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Must have the willingness to function as a team member with the ability to make skillful independent decisions.
  • Valid California driver's license and ability to meet the organization’s insurance carrier guidelines are required.
  • Must pass all required background clearances in accordance with agency, County, State, and federal standards.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field is preferred.
  • Specific knowledge and experience with foster youth culture, housing first approaches, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for client placement to achieve established objectives of the department.
  • Work with participants on job search skills and activities to ensure continued job start readiness.
  • Relationship management of day-to-day operational tasks and job placement process within business relationships established.
  • Manage job postings by screening, matching and referring participants to jobs to secure unsubsidized placements.
  • Prepare participants for interviews and follow-up with employers after interviews.
  • Facilitate initial program orientation workshop and weekly job club/alumni group.
  • Provide retention services to the participants at critical milestones of employment.
  • Responsible for assisting with training and development of new staff.
  • Assist in department orientation and training for new employees as requested to ensure quality work outcomes.
  • Serve as part of the development team by providing information and support for the development of quality operations.
  • Maintain an above average working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to assure safe work environment for clients and all personnel.
  • Responsible for self-development.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings and assigned training and complete required certifications, i.e. CPR, First Aid, etc.
  • Attend all training and collaborative meetings necessary for development of employment resources.
