About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a nonprofit organization with nearly 500 employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives. As one of the largest providers of social services in the region, VOA-NCNN operates over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, substance abuse, and recovery services for diverse populations. The organization's mission is to inspire self-sufficiency, dignity, and hope by providing critical health and human services. This full-time Employment Specialist position is for the Adolfo Housing Program at the Mather Community Campus, a Certified Great Place to Work.

Requirements

  • Two years of successful experience in the delivery of human services or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to foster youth population, homelessness, substance abuse, minorities, and people with disabilities.
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Willingness to function as a team member.
  • Ability to make skillful independent decisions.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to meet the organization’s insurance carrier guidelines.
  • Must pass all required background clearances.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field.
  • Specific knowledge and experience with foster youth culture, housing first approaches, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the program efficiently and compassionately, ensuring quality service to residents through coordination of program functions and assistance to staff.
  • Collaborate with partner service providers and staff to ensure quality service to residents and support organizational operations.
  • Work with participants on job search skills and activities.
  • Manage job matching and placement activities with employers and participants.
  • Assess job readiness.
  • Facilitate job clubs/alumni groups.
  • Provide retention services to employees.
  • Assist in department orientation and training for new employees.
  • Serve as part of the development team by providing information and support for quality operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings and assigned training.
  • Complete required certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid).
  • Attend training and collaborative meetings for development of employment resources.
