About The Position

A class incumbent is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive wellness program serving sworn and non-sworn staff of a correctional law enforcement agency, to include correctional officers, probation/parole officers, administrative, and support staff. The incumbent will participate in the development of policies, procedures, regulations, and objectives for coordinating and managing department-wide wellness and peer support programs designed to support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of correctional staff. This position plays a critical role in promoting physical health, mental resilience, and overall well-being among staff exposed to high-stress and trauma-related work conditions. The Employee Wellness Coordinator will collaborate closely with labor representatives, executive leadership, and facility management to ensure wellness initiatives align with collective bargaining agreements and agency policies. This position requires regular travel to state correctional institutions and administrative offices. Work is performed in secure facilities that may involve exposure to stressful or sensitive situations and occasional after-hours availability may be required following critical incidents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Psychology, Human Resources, Social Work, Organizational Development, or a closely related field.
  • At least three (3) years of professional experience in employee wellness, occupational health, behavioral health, public safety, or related field.
  • Six (6) months’ experience in developing policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in a unionized and/or public sector environment.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and occupational stress management.
  • Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and administer statewide employee wellness initiatives tailored to correctional environments.
  • Develop programs addressing stress management, trauma exposure, PTSD awareness, burnout prevention, and physical fitness.
  • Implement peer support and post-critical incident response protocols.
  • Promote work-life balance and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Partner with union leadership to ensure wellness programming aligns with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Participate in labor-management committees related to employee health and safety.
  • Maintain transparent communication with staff while respecting confidentiality and contractual obligations.
  • Coordinate confidential referral pathways to Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and behavioral health providers.
  • Develop stigma-reduction initiatives surrounding mental health services.
  • Provide support coordination following critical incidents, including assaults, inmate deaths, and other traumatic events.
  • Assist supervisors in recognizing and addressing staff burnout and compassion fatigue.
  • Deliver training sessions on stress management, resilience, financial wellness, sleep health, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Develop wellness-focused onboarding materials for new hires.
  • Support leadership development related to workforce well-being.
  • Track participation, outcomes, and program effectiveness.
  • Prepare reports for executive leadership and labor-management committees.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, including confidentiality standards.
  • Maintain records in accordance with public sector regulations and privacy requirements.
